How to choose a robot mower
A robot mower should be matched to the lawn it will actually maintain. Use this guide to understand the decisions that matter before comparing models.
1. Start with mowable area
Measure the grass area—not the full property size. Exclude the house, driveway, patio, garden beds, pool, and other non-grass spaces. Leave capacity above your estimate so the mower is not operating at its limit every day.
2. Map the layout
Count separate lawn zones and note gates, narrow passages, trees, play equipment, retaining walls, ponds, and garden edges. A simple open lawn has different navigation needs than several disconnected or obstacle-heavy areas.
3. Check slopes and ground conditions
Record the steepest parts of the lawn and whether the ground is uneven, soft, or frequently wet. Published slope ratings are model-specific and should be checked against the actual property before purchase.
4. Compare navigation systems
- Boundary-wire systems: use a physical perimeter wire and can suit properties where a fixed boundary is practical.
- Wire-free systems: may use satellite positioning, cameras, sensors, or a combination. Performance depends on the property, visibility, obstacles, and the specific system.
5. Think about connectivity and charging
Choose a protected charging location with suitable power access. Some connected features can depend on Wi-Fi, cellular service, an app, or clear sky visibility. Confirm requirements for the exact model.
6. Plan for installation and support
Before buying, confirm what is included, who handles setup, what happens if the mower does not suit the property, where replacement parts come from, and how warranty service is handled in Canada.
7. Compare the complete cost
Look beyond the mower price. Ask about installation materials, accessories, replacement blades, connectivity fees, winter storage, shipping, taxes, and service.
